Much of the AI conversation is about what AI can do — and it can do a lot. But understanding the limits and failure modes of AI is just as important. It helps you use AI tools wisely, avoid costly mistakes, and make better decisions about when to trust AI outputs and when not to.

Why this matters

AI tools are incredibly capable and remarkably brittle at the same time. Knowing where the edges are isn't pessimism — it's practical wisdom that makes you a smarter user of these tools.

1. AI cannot reliably tell truth from fiction

This is the most important limitation to understand. Large language models generate text by predicting what word or phrase comes next — based on patterns learned from training data. They do not have a built-in mechanism for checking whether a statement is true.

This is why hallucination happens. An LLM asked about an obscure historical figure might confidently invent publications, quotes, and dates that don't exist. The text sounds authoritative. The facts are fabricated.

Real example

A New York lawyer was sanctioned in 2023 after submitting a legal brief that cited court cases ChatGPT had invented. The cases sounded real, had realistic case numbers, and appeared to be legitimate precedents — but none of them existed.

What this means for you: Always verify factual claims from AI — especially names, dates, statistics, citations, and anything with real-world consequences. Use AI for drafting and ideation, not as a source of verified facts.

2. AI has no real-world awareness or common sense

AI models are trained on text and data — not on experience of the physical world. This creates surprising gaps. An LLM might know everything written about how to ride a bicycle, but it has no felt understanding of balance, momentum, or the fear of falling.

Commonsense reasoning — the kind of intuitive understanding humans use every day — is something AI still struggles with. It can fail at simple spatial reasoning, physical cause-and-effect, or social situations that any five-year-old would navigate easily.

3. AI cannot truly understand context or intent

AI processes your words — it doesn't understand what you actually mean in the way a human colleague would. It can miss sarcasm, misread tone, fail to pick up on what's left unsaid, or not realise that a question has changed meaning based on earlier context in the conversation.

This is why AI assistants sometimes give confidently unhelpful answers — they're responding to what you wrote, not what you meant.

4. AI knowledge has a cutoff date

LLMs are trained on data up to a certain date — their "knowledge cutoff". They have no awareness of events after that point unless they're given access to real-time tools (like web search). Asking an LLM about yesterday's news, current prices, or recent events will often get you outdated or made-up information.

AI models learn from human-generated data — and human data is full of biases, stereotypes, and historical inequities. Models can inherit these biases in subtle ways: associating certain roles with certain genders, reflecting cultural assumptions, or producing outputs that disadvantage certain groups.

This is not a solved problem. It's an active area of research and one of the most important considerations in responsible AI deployment.

6. AI cannot replace human judgement in high-stakes decisions

AI can assist with analysis, surface options, and summarise information — but it should not be the final decision-maker in situations with serious consequences. Medical diagnosis, legal rulings, hiring decisions, and financial advice all require human accountability, ethical reasoning, and contextual judgement that AI currently cannot provide reliably.

A useful mental model

Think of AI as a very fast, very well-read intern. It can produce impressive first drafts and surface useful information quickly. But it needs supervision, fact-checking, and an experienced human to take responsibility for the final output.

7. AI cannot learn from your conversation (by default)

Most AI systems don't update their underlying model from individual conversations. When you correct an AI or it makes a mistake, it doesn't "learn" from that in a permanent way. Every new conversation typically starts fresh. Persistent memory, where it exists, is a product feature layered on top — not native learning.

8. AI has no goals, values, or agency — unless given them

A base AI model doesn't want anything. It doesn't have ambitions, values, or a hidden agenda. It generates outputs based on its training and your input. The risks people worry about with AI — misuse, manipulation, harmful outputs — generally come from humans using AI with bad intent, or from poorly designed systems, not from AI "deciding" to cause harm.

That said, as AI is given more autonomy — in the form of agents that can take actions in the world — questions of alignment, values, and oversight become very real and very important. We'll cover this in the Agentic AI and Ethics modules.
